More about Woerthersee

The Wörthersee is the largest lake in Carinthia and because of its climate and southerly location it is one of the warmest lakes in the Alps.

The Wörthersee has an area of 19,39 sq km and is 17 km long. The lake is located in a large basin in the hilly landscape of the so called Klagenfurter Becken, which was mainly formed by glaciers in the Ice Age. The lake stretches from the Veldener Bay to Klagenfurt. The catchment area comprises an area of 162 sq km.

The lake is divided into three basins by islands and peninsulas. The western basin stretches from Velden to Pörtschach, the central basin from Pörtschach to Maria Wörth, and the eastern  basin from Maria Wörth to Klagenfurt. The Wörthersee measures 85,2 metres at it deepest point.

The Wörthersee is fed by a variety of smaller streams, the biggest of them is the Reifnitzbach. The lake’s outlet in the east runs into the Glan and into the Gurk (Glanfurt/Sattnitz) and this then flows into the River Drau.

Due to the sheltered location and the modest current the water temperature reaches 27°C  in the summer and on the shore the temperatures can be higher. By the end of June the lake’s temperature is well above 20°C and only starts to cool down during September. The lake can freeze over from the middle to the end of January and in extremely cold winters the whole lake becomes a skating paradise with thousands of skaters on it – last time this happened was 2006.

More about Pörtschach

Pörtschach on the northern banks of the Wörthersee is still the epitome of the Carinthian Tourist Industry. One can hardly imagine that this naturally blessed little village was a tiny, completely unknown fishing and farm village 140 years ago. Pörtschach’s history dates back to roman times. Numerous roman finds show that the Noric Main Route led from Velden via Töschling, Pörtschach along the lake via Goritschach, Sallach, Pritschitz and Leinsdorf to Krumpendorf.

Pörtschach is 446m above sea level on the northern shore of the Wörthersee (the warmest lake in the Austrian Alps) and is located about 14 km west of Klagenfurt. Characteristic for this lakeside resort is the beautiful Peninsula. Pörtschach has about 2650 inhabitants.

Johannes Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann in 1877:

“I just want to tell you that I stopped in Pörtschach to carry on the next day to Vienna. But the first day was so beautiful that I had to stay a second day. The second day was even more beautiful, so I will stay for the time being.”

Charming Villas and classy lake-side Chalets witness that this has always been a sophisticated meeting point for the Viennese Society. The ambience is fresh, young and sporty and the lake and the surrounding area offers a great variety of activities – swimming, sailing, water skiing, wind surfing, golfing, tennis, sunbathing, walking or just chilling.

A varied number of events take place throughout the season – World Body Painting Festival, International Tennis Tournaments (World ITF Seniors & the Werzer Generali Cup), GTI Meeting, Vespa Days, Harley Davidson Meeting, Johannes Brahms Competition and many interesting congresses…..

Things worth seeing in Pörtschach: Blumenpromenade along the shore, Landspitz, Hohes Gloriette (view point), Hotel Schloss Leonstain with Court Yard and Brahms Bust, Ruine Alt- Leonstain, many old Villas and Buildings Wörthersee- Architecture like e.g.  Werzer Badeanstalt, Villa Almrausch, Villa Venezia, Parkvilla Wörth.
